My current work is inspired by a firm connection to nature and the Irish landscape. For as long as I can recall I have been an outdoors person. Yosemite National Park in California was the pillar influence for my most recent body of work ‘Where Time stands Still’. The intention for this series was to make it as large-scale as possible but still be able to maneuver the work in the studio. The oil paintings stand 8.5ft high and 3ft wide. I wish for the viewer to get similar impact as I did standing staring up at the giant sequoias (the largest known trees living on earth) towering over me at elevations between 4,500 to 7,000 feet.
In addition, a source that has stuck with me when evolving the work is the book ‘The Hidden Life of Trees’, written by Peter Wohlleben. The forester personifies the forest as ‘social beings’. Wohlleben speaks about how the trees communicate under the ground through their ‘world wide web’ of roots and how they work as a community to make sure each tree in their proximity is kept alive.
